  63. Proofreading/collation 8: eighth level of proofreading; this level assumes that the proofs have been very badly presented by the client and/or typesetter and that the general standard of English may still be very unsatisfactory and require an extreme amount of work to establish clarity of expression and accuracy, apart from checking literals, consistency in style and headings etc.; rate per hour and average estimated fees include checking that references in text are consistent with bibliography, checking that bibliography is in a consistent style; checking that all cross references are present and correct; if necessary, inserting page numbers for cross references or repaginating them; and, if necessary, collating two or more sets of corrected proofs into the master set (e.g. corrections from one or more authors as well as from an expert reader); style follows client's style sheet or, in the absence of the latter and where there are minor inconsistencies, the 'majority rule' applies (i.e. style variations that occur in the majority of cases are applied in cases of inconsistency). Where these and any other corrections may require a large amount of rekeying by the typesetter and therefore affect the overall costs, MNE will query the correction.
